Most people love water – whether it be watching it, swimming in it, or just listening to the sound of the waves, there’s something about it that has fascinated humans for thousands of years. Here are our favourite watery wonders, from the action packed to ultra-tranquil. Enjoy!
10. Inle Lake (Myanmar)
The Inle Lake is not even Myanmar’s largest lake, but it is one of Asia’s most fascinating water destinations. Over 70,000 people live on the lake, in stilted or floating houses. Visitors can also sleep above the water in awesome, overwater bungalows (just like Tahiti, but more rustic!), as well as take boat rides down the river to visit floating markets, as well as the many temples and cafes which dot the shoreline.

9. Lake Baikal (Russia)
This Russian lake is not only the largest, and oldest, lake in the world, but it is also the deepest. Lake Baikal is also home to some of the most unique aqua life in the world, and is sometimes referred to as ‘the Galapagos of Russia’. Do you want to find out what creatures are hiding at the bottom of the world’s deepest lake? Of course, you do! Plus, the environment surrounding the lake are pretty stunning too – especially in the winter time – so there’s no shortage of reasons to visit.

8. The Dead Sea (Jordan/Israel)
The Dead Sea is not only the lowest spot on the planet, but it is also the saltiest body of water. This means that the sea has no wildlife (so no creepy crawlies or man-eating sharks to be afraid of), and also that swimmers naturally float in the water! The natural buoyancy is so high that you can easily lie back and read a book while floating on the sea. Don’t believe us? Give it a try!

7. Lake Malawi (Malawi)
Lake Malawi is the jewel in the crown of ‘the warm heat of Africa’, with over 750 species of tropical fish. This is a wonderful place to relax, with warm and friendly locals and an amazing choice of activities from feeding sea eagles, cruising in wooden canoes and diving to see the incredible marine life. It is said to have the most diverse fish life in the world, so it is no wonder Malawians are so proud to show it off.

6. Isle of Pines (New Caledonia)
The Isle of Pines, an island off the New Caledonian mainland, has some of the most expensive real estate in the entire South Pacific. Given it’s competing with places like Tahiti, that’s really saying something! One visit, however, will show you exactly why this place is so sought after – impossibly blue water, endless soft, white sand and amazing snorkeling is some of what makes this place so darn beautiful (and so darn expensive). Luckily, it’s a lot cheaper to visit as a tourist!

5. The Nile (Egypt)
There are few places in the world that can measure up to the amazing history of Egypt. The Nile River has been an integral part of society for literally thousands of years, and it almost gives you chills to travel upon it! Whether you choose a larger boat or modest, wind-powered felucca, a couple of nights along the Nile is bound to be an amazing experience. Bonus points if you a) jump into the water (watch out for crocodiles!) or b) sleep out under the stars. Bliss!

4. The Panama Canal (Panama)
Most bodies of water are a testament to just how amazingly beautiful the world around us is. The Panama Canal is different. It is a testament to just what humans can achieve when they are frustrated enough. Built in 1914 to significantly shorten the route taken by ships, the Panama Canal revolutionized transport. Today, there are many cruises that take you through it – even better if you wear a Panama hat while you do it.

3. Venice (Italy)
Venice may just be the most romantic city in the world (yes, I said it, Paris!). With absolutely no cars, just silent, manpowered gondolas to get around its famous canals, it is incredibly peaceful and absolutely stunning. Aside from taking a ride on a gondola, the pretty Venetian masks are also an absolute must-do, as is drinking an extremely overpriced coffee in the jawdroppingly beautiful Piazza San Marco.

2. Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe/Zambia)
The ‘Vic Falls’ are so impressive, they are said to make Niagara look like a trickle. In order to find out yourself, make sure you don a gorgeous orange poncho (available to hire from just outside the entrance), put your passport somewhere VERY safe (you’ll need it if you’re planning to cross into Zambia), and head on in. Once you’ve taken a look, you can choose what other water related activities you’re into: bungee jumping, white water rafting, canoe trips or river cruises.

1. Great Barrier Reef (Australia)
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has the amazing title of ‘the largest living thing in the world’. How cool is that? Unfortunately, climate change is not being kind to the Great Barrier Reef, so it is worth visiting as soon as possible so that you can still be dazzled by the colourful coral, adorable fish (yes, you may find Nemo) and other incredible sea life. The towns around the “top end” are also pretty entertaining too – is there anywhere else in the world you can put bets on toad racing? We think not.
