Beachy Head – Stand on the Edge of England

Beachy Head, East Sussex, England. This stunning dazzling white chalk headland is a famous feature in the area. At 162 m (531 ft) high it is the highest cliff of the kind in England. Due to its composition, the rock is delicate and sensitive to the outside forces. In 2001 a popular pillar of the Devil’s Chimney has collapsed after winter.

The incredibly white shoreline has been helping the sailors to navigate in the English Channel for centuries. However, despite how beautiful the cliff looks like, it has its own shadow side. Due to the fogs and low clouds, Beachy Head has always been dangerous to the sailors – therefore there is a lighthouse. Besides, there is a high rate of suicides here. Even philosopher Friedrich Engels asked that his ashes were scattered here. His will has been fulfilled. Nevertheless Beachy Head has always been a popular tourist attraction.

Why go there?

Admire the rare natural wonder of bright white rock. Great views to the English Channel open from here. There is also a restaurant with panoramic views.

When to go there?

Anytime. Although in summer there are a lot of ice-cream vans and similar facilities.

How to get there?

There is an easy access by bus or train from Brighton and Eastbourne. Also, there is a free parking lot next to the site.
