1) Explore Oia
When you think of Santorini, what comes to mind? If you pictured whitewashed houses with blue shutters, then you must be imagining the beautiful village of Oia. Perched on the northwest edge of the caldera, Oia is a maze of narrow streets, renovated cave houses and small squares. This town used to be a cluster of seamen houses, but now hosts thousands of tourists each year wanting to experience its breathtaking ocean views and take photos of one of the most iconic landscapes in all of Greece.
2) Visit Perissa Beach
Perissa is the best swimming beach on Santorini and has the nicest sand. Good restaurants are spread along the beach front. Perissa is about a 30 minute drive from Fira and 45 minutes from Oia.
3) Go cliff jumping at Amoudi Bay
Does jumping in to crystal clear Mediterranean waters surrounded by the striking cliff faces of Santorini sound like your cup of tea? Well then you HAVE TO check out this incredible swimming spot at Amoudi Bay. You can swim straight off the rocks, or if you are game, climb up the stairs of the massive boulder in the water and do your best dive in!
4) Take a Donkey ride in Fira
Donkeys in Santorini are an integral part of the local tourism scene, providing tourists much-appreciated rides up and down the 588 steps leading down to the old harbor of Fira. There are hundreds of donkeys and mules lined up along the way.
5) Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera is located in Fira and exhibits findings from the prehistoric times that have been excavated from Akrotiri, the Ancient Thera and other areas on Santorini. Exhibits include ceramics, marble statues, Minoan frescoes from Akrotiri, tools and weaponry.
6) Explore the Santorini Countryside
This is one of the advantages of renting a car – you can out from the main towns and explore the beautiful Santorini countryside. The island’s small – you can almost always see the sea – but there are lots of farmland (especially in the south) and you can’t drive for very long without stumbling across a winery.
7) Visit Ancient Thera and Akrotiri
Akrotiri is a Minoan Age settlement buried by the widespread Theran eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC. As a result, it is remarkably well-preserved. Ancient Thera, an ancient city built circa 800 BC from the Spartans, which named the island after their commander. From that point the view is amazing while surrounded by the Royal Arch, the ruins of Artemidoros Temple, the Ancient Agora, Temple of Dionysus, Temple of Apollo Karneios, ancient burial grounds and a Theater.
8) Visit Firostefani and Imerovigli
Firostefani is the small Fira neighborhood, within easy walking distance from the capital (it is only 1 km far). It’s the highest point of view over the caldera, we have been here in the evening and we were able to enjoy the magnificent view of Fira at night. From here, you can hear the chattering of the people at the restaurants, the small lights will give you the impression of being in a Christmas crib, a fresh and wet wind rising from the caldera will give you chills on the skin. Further north there is Imerovigli, a very quiet luxury area which is full of the best hotels, apartments and restaurants. Only for those on who have no budget limits.
9) Take a Caldera boat trip
Take a “Caldera Boat Trip” and sail by a beautiful traditional boat to see the volcano, learn all about its history, swim in the Hot Springs and discover the nearby island, Thirasia.
