This Real Life ‘Hunger Games’ City Was A Social Experiment That Almost Worked.

If you recognize the dystopian-looking city in the images below, you're probably remember them from scenes in The Hunger Games. However, this is no post-apocalyptic movie set: Instead, it's a real city, and it sits just east of Paris.

The city is in Seine-Saint-Denis, and it looks like it's from another world, time, and place. It's been described as "somewhere between a new world utopian dream and a postmodern, neoclassical housing estate." We just think it looks pretty awesome -- even if it is a little bit eery.

A French photographer named Laurent Kronental has put together a photo series of the remarkable, strange city.


The series is called "Souvenir d'un Futur," or Memory of a Future.






The intent of the series is to shine a spotlight on the city and its residents, most of whom are senior citizens.


The housing estates here were built sometime between the fifties and the eighties, intended to house migrant populations of foreign and rural refugees.


Postmodernism came into play in the late seventies in early eighties, built in direct opposition to the whitewashed style of Parisian decades passed.




Kronental took these photos over the course of four years of visits to the city.


"These 'monuments', living memories of their time, personify the fragile strength of a youth having blindly aged," Kronental said.












Though stark, the city's residents have managed to turn the peculiar space into a home. Can you imagine living in a place like this?
