The Most Stunning Photos Of An Erupting Volcano Ever Taken.

The Most Stunning Photos Of An Erupting Volcano Ever Taken.

Before it became known as Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe was believed to be the location where the god Zeus buried the most powerful and frightening monster Typhon. Greek mythology reasons that this is the cause for the volcanic eruptions from Mount Etna.

The volcano is situated on the east coast in Sicily, Italy. On December 3, 2015 Mount Etna became active again shooting red, hot lava, and ashes into the sky after two years of lying dormant. Photographer Marco Restivo has shot the eruptions in five images to display the volcanic lightning. Also called dirty thunderstorm, the volcanic ash rub against particles causing an electric charge which in turn produces lightning strikes.

As the most active volcano in the world, the eruption lasted close to an hour. Mount Etna has had eruptions on and off beginning about 2.5 million years ago and stands an impressive 10,922 feet high.
