Have you ever traveled across the country? Most specifically, have you ever traveled across the country for under $500?
It seems totally impossible, but one young traveler figured out the secret. Derek Low took a journey around the United States for 15 days, using only Amtrak to get around. Though trains take much longer than planes, the fares are considerably cheaper - not to mention more scenic. They're the perfect alternative for young travelers on a budget, and Low's photos from his trip are simply spectacular.
This is Low's route across America, stretched out over 15 days. If he did the trip with no stops, it would take about 4 days.
Low is 24 years old, and works as an engineer in San Francisco.
He traveled 3,400 miles using only Amtrak trains.
He broke his trip into chunks: San Francisco to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City to Denver, Denver to Chicago, and Chicago to New York.
"Traveling by train gives you a glimpse into the soul of America," Low said in an interview.
Clearly, much of the soul of America is absolutely beautiful.
Low documented his journey by writing and taking photographs.
All things considered, taking the train seems like a comfortable and awesome way to travel.
And you certainly can't beat the views.
Or the price tag: Low's entire ticket cost $429.
Clearly, trains are an underrated and awesome way to travel the country.
