A town in southern Italy is located on a canyon, which defines Matera’s landscape and architecture. Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, established by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, the town is famous for its cave dwellings.

The Sassi di Matera is the ancient town of houses carved into the rock. People lived here until the 1950s, but then they were moved because the place needed restoration. Today pubs, restaurants and hotels are found in this location.

Why to go there?: The authentic town was inhabited 9000 years ago. The blend of ancient history and modern lifestyle make it a very attractive holiday destination.
When to go there?: Summers are hot and winters are mild in Matera.
How to get there?: 1,5 hr with a train, that frequently goes from Bari.
