Many of dream of being able to quit our day jobs and leave the world behind in favor of a tropical fantasyland, and the truth is, it's not totally inconceivable. However, if you want to make that leap, you need either A) a trust fund, or B) a dream.
Elora Hardy had the latter, and that's how she completely changed her life. After spending years building a lucrative career in New York City, Hardy decided to build homes in Indonesia. What she has done there is totally incredible and inspiring.
When she got there, she wasn't about to bask in the sun on the beach all day. Instead, she got to work.
For five years, Hardy and her crew have been revolutionizing bamboo construction in the country.
The structures are absolutely gorgeous, inside and out.
However, these bamboo homes don't just have their aesthetics going for them.
As it turns out, bamboo is completely indestructible, and isn't typically eaten by insects.
It also has the strength of concrete, making it a great material with which to build homes.
Because bamboo grows so fast, it's an incredibly renewable resource, which means that the opportunities to build with bamboo are endless.
According to Hardy, bamboo is woefully underused when it comes to housing construction.
Hardy claims that she was inspired by her father, who also believed in the sustainability of bamboo.
Hopefully, Hardy's work inspires a trend. It's strong, it's resourceful, and it's downright beautiful.
