How far would you go to preserve the legacy of something that you loved? Photojournalist and world traveler Daniel Sullivan endured a 220-mile hike while crossing dangerous cliffs, battling white waters, and braving dark jungles to document one of Hawaii’s biggest legends, the impressive King’s Highway.

500 years ago in Maui, Hawaii, King Pi'ilani constructed the King's Highway. It once served as the lifeline for the island, and was the center of commerce and trade. It was also used as protection from invasion.

Today, many sections of the King's Highway have been destroyed or lost to the overgrown jungle, an unfortunate loss of cultural heritage for Hawaiian people. Sullivan hopes to reclaim some of that heritage by photographing the highway and compiling his images into a book. He hopes that recording his journey on the forgotten trail will help preserve its legacy. See some of his breathtaking images below.
