What would it take to escape from the world you know for three years, traveling the world and stopping in every place imaginable? Walter Chang did just that, and according to his experience, all it took was a little bit of planning- and a whole lot of saving.
Initially, he was only going to travel for 8-12 months, but when he realized he could stretch his money even further, that's exactly what he did. Part of the reason he wanted to extend was because he realized that in other places in the world, they value vacation time a lot more than they do in the United States.
"It's important because if you're stuck at work your body is drained," Chang said in an interview. "You need to get out and refresh yourself and interact with your family and friends. The whole system is kind of messed up, people work a lot and get depressed and it affects their work as well as their life. Nobody benefits from it."
And before you think that he has a trust fund to fall back on, consider this: Chang saved for this epic adventure for only a year before setting off. Check out the photos and video below - Once you see them, you're going to want to start planning your own big adventure.
Bagan, Myanmar: These kids were being photographed by another tourist when I stopped on my bike. They were taking a break while the traveler was speaking to their caretaker. I took this photo during their break.
Koh Lanta, Thailand: Stumbled upon these fisherman patiently waiting.
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: Relatively unknown country but it’s a joy to just hang out and watch life go by here with some great live music.
Vilankulous, Mozambique: Easy going coastal life and amazing sea food.
Semonkong, Lesotho: This landlocked country in South Africa has stunning views and friendly people to boast.
Petra, Jordan: The rose city felt exactly like Indiana Jones.
Kyoto, Japan: The attention to detail is something very Japanese.
Varnasi, India: Life and Death along the Ganges River. Thousands of people bathe in the river each morning where bodies are also cremated.
