A 2,134 m (7,001 ft) high mountain is famous for the giant head statues scattered on the summit. Built by King Antiochus I in 62 BC it is thought to be a sanctuary and a royal tomb. However, the king’s tomb has not been found yet. The style of these ancient works of art combine Greek and Persian tradition.
The head statues of the king, various gods and animals once had the bodies with inscribed names. It is unknown when exactly they were separated due to iconoclasm. Now only miniature sculptures provide the idea of the original statues. However, besides the heads the monument has well preserved areas.
