Astypalaia – Undiscovered Gem in the Aegean Sea, Hellas (Greece)

One of the Dodecanese island group in the warm Aegean Sea, Astypalaia is another gorgeous, but relatively undiscovered gem. It counts a long and glorious history: it received a status of a free state when Roman Empire ruled the world and had the Querini castle on the top of the hill. Today various archaeological sites and intact treasures from the classical period are open to view.

Museum at Pera Gialos features pottery, bronze weapons and stone tools. The chapel of Agia Varvara houses a very well preserved mosaic floor from an early Christian basilica. The island’s landscape features white houses clustered together on the hills, overlooking the sea. Great beaches provide a nice leisurely day out, while restaurants will spoil with fresh sea food and wine.

Why to go there?: The island has very interesting museums and sites, heritage from the Hellenistic and early Christian times, pristine beaches and is less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos. The site also provides various other activities like climbing, biking, hiking, scuba diving and even camping at Chora.
When to go there?: All year round – Astypalaia drops into a mild climate zone.
How to get there?: Get there by plane from Athens and Rhodes Airports or ferry from Piraeus and Kalymnos.
